Flu Shot

It’s fall and flu season is around the corner. Call today to schedule an appointment for an influenza vaccination, now available for all of our patients 6 months of age and over. You can be vaccinated during your regular scheduled visit. Not due to come in for a visit? Don’t worry, you can call to schedule a quick visit with one of our available Medical Assistants to get your flu vaccine.

The CDC recommends getting your flu vaccine as soon as it is available, preferably by October. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body and provide protection against the flu.

Corvallis Family Medicine will be carrying a few different types of vaccines this flu season depending on your age and health. Fluzone Quadrivalent (four-strain) Influenza Vaccine will be available for all of our patients aged 6 months or older. In addition to this vaccine, we have a couple other options that have some age or health restrictions.

Everyone 6 months and older is recommended for annual flu vaccination with rare exception.
Center for Disease Control and Prevention

There will be a Fluzone High-Dose Influenza Vaccine for our patients age 65 and over. Fluzone High-Dose vaccine contains four times the amount of antigen – the part of the vaccine that prompts the body to make antibody – contained in regular flu shots. Human immune defenses (antibodies) become weaker with age, which places older people at greater risk of severe illness from influenza. Aging also decreases the body’s ability to have a good immune response after getting influenza vaccine. A higher dose of antigen in the vaccine is intended to give older people a better immune response, and therefore better protection against flu.

There is so much information about Influenza vaccines we could not possibly share it all in just one post. If you would like further information we suggest going to the CDC website. This is a great resource and is updated throughout the flu season.
